Who we help

Helping Mom or Dad with Medicare

Many of our calls come from adult children. Here is how to help without taking over.

Start with permission

Your parent makes the final decision, and they can include you in every conversation. To speak with Medicare on their behalf, they can complete a Medicare authorization form (CMS-10106) naming you. Carriers have similar forms for their plans. A power of attorney may also be useful for the bigger picture.

What to gather before the call

  • Their Medicare card and any current plan ID cards
  • A full list of prescriptions, with doses
  • Their doctors, specialists, and preferred hospital
  • Their pharmacy
  • Any letters from their current plan, especially the Annual Notice of Change

Questions worth asking

  • Are all of their doctors in the plan’s network?
  • What would a hospital stay cost them?
  • Are their medications covered, and at what tier?
  • Do they qualify for help with costs, such as Extra Help for prescriptions?

Joining from a distance

Family members are often in different cities. We are happy to set up a phone or video call that includes you, your parent, and anyone else who helps with decisions.
